Update
The Impact Unit CD Distribution Series has been discontinued. We are now
working to create a free CD library program of the series. We hope to provide
this program in a number of locations throughout the city and the country.
The 30 CD's in this series are an educational gold mine that seamlessly
ties together the reality of the past and present experience of Black Americans.
Series
information
Years ago (and it's only 40 years ago) in communities of color throughout
New York you could hear Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and a host of
others speaking out in churches, community centers, and on the streets.
We are presenting an opportunity to have this be a reality once again.
As a part of an educational community arts project created by Darryl
Hell, Real University would like to offer FREE CD's of speeches
by many of the queens and kings of our continued struggle for humanity.
Our selections will also include presentations from Gil Nobel, Amy Goodman,
Noam Chomsky and many other well-respected investigative reporters, journalists
& intellectuals.
Our hope is to create an educational community dialog about issues that
are important to the growth and well-being of our communities. The overall
theme is collective community awareness / knowledge, collective community
effort and collective community respect.
We currently supply collage CD's of speeches, lectures and interviews
to be played in unison from 11am to 12 noon on Sundays. We only ask that
you play it in your store, barber shop, outdoor speaker system, community
center, church, restaurant or home at the target time to create the strongest
impact. You can play them throughout the week and record them for yourself
or others if you like.
New speeches will be distributed Thursday through Saturday. The CD's
of the previous week's speeches will be collected during the delivery
of the following week's speech.
CD's can be kept and or purchased for a $1.00 CD burning fee.
Names like Angela Davis, Medger & Merlie Evers, Fannie Lou Hammer,
Malcolm X, Student Non-Violent Committee, Frederick Douglass, Ella Baker,
The Invaders (Mississippi), Joe Rauh, Unita Blackwell, Southern Christian
Leadership Council, The Blackstone Rangers (Chicago), Martin Luther King
Jr. and thousands of others have been removed from our minds and buried
in our history books or reduced to short sound bites and slogans on T-shirts.
The pilot program was launched in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY February
23rd, 2003. The program officially launched in summer 2003 and included
providing a community audio library service, community forums, a hyperlink
library, and a web-based audio library of the Impact Unit series.
Without having a clear understanding of what people fought for to gain
our present freedoms, we will not be able to understand our current place
in history. Most of the educational and social problems we now face were
spoken about as far back as enslaved people yearned for freedom and equality
hundreds of years ago. This needs to be brought into our current consciousness
& conversations.
We thank you for your time and look forward to the future
of this community art project.
Please feel free to contact us about participating with
this art project.
WBAI 99.5 FM NYC will
provide the chance for you to obtain our special
6-CD "Pouch Collection" when you support their pledge drive
via
their website wbai.org.
We will supply a link when it is available. Stay tuned...
Please pledge and support radio &
media that supports you.

This was a speech given in Harlem, New York 1964 during a youth leadership
conference. It was also where the now famous sound sample "By Any
Means Necessary" came from. He had used this phrase in previous
speeches, but the sample was pulled from this recording.
His analysis of media image maniplulation is quite edifying, when one
takes into account this was 10 years before the documentation
was released about the FBI Counter Intelligence Program and its media
connection.
There are also interesting assessments of U.S. military actions that
are quite poignant in relation to our current military endeavours and
interests in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel / Palestine.
