 Vicky Virgin has been creating dance theater performances since the early 1990s. Although theatrical in the sense that she creates an atmosphere and characters, her pieces are neither literal nor narrative. She explores the interplay of form and content and the resulting challenge of how to organically integrate movement with other theatrical elements. Her work is influenced by installation and conceptual art; classical ballet; and her forefathers who pushed wooden handcarts across the plains.
Virgin’s work has been produced by many downtown venues including HERE Art Center, FringeNYC, Baryshnikov Art Center, Dixon Place, and Dance/NYC. Her choreography was commissioned for an off-Broadway production of Moliere’s Les Precieuses Ridicules. She has also created site-specific work for an empty swimming pool, a storefront window on 42nd Street, and a dressing room in an old department store.
As a performer Ms. Virgin has danced with New York Theatre Ballet, St. Louis Ballet, Ballet de Montreal and D. C. City Ballet. Her performing experience also includes modern dance, musical theater, opera, folk dance and film. She was a member of the experimental theater groups, Cannon Company of New York and Impossible Theater of Baltimore, where she served as both performer and choreographer. Virgin works as a demographic analyst for the City of New York.
