DeKalb police Monday had filed no charges in the death of a 67-year-old woman whose teenage grandson struck her twice with a car Sunday.

The 15-year-old boy, who was not named, was released to his mother Sunday night, said police spokesman Herschel Grangent. Grangent said the investigation was continuing.

Authorities were trying to sort different versions of the event from two witnesses.

One witness claimed the teen struck his grandmother intentionally following an argument; the other insisted it was an accident.

The boy was sitting in the driver’s seat of his grandmothers’ Chevrolet Malibu at an apartment complex on Peachtree Place Parkway about noon Sunday.

One witness told police the teen was talking through the car’s partially open door with the grandmother when the two began fighting.

According to the witness, the boy put the car in reverse, hitting the woman once, said police Officer Herschel Grangent. The boy then drove forward, striking the woman a second time, the witness said.

The grandmother, identified by family members as Margaret Garner, died at the scene. A 16-year-old family friend who was outside at the time was also struck. He was critically hurt, Grangent said.

By Sunday evening, the friend’s condition had improved. He told police that the grandson did not get into a fight with his grandmother and that the death was an accident.
