1. Introductions - The meeting started at 7 PM, chaired by Chapter 34 VP Frank Stearns.
Minutes of the April 17 chapter meeting were distributed on-line and by hard copy at the
2. Treasury Report - not available. Meeting attendees contributed toward the cost of the
meeting room at the church.
3. NY State Marches for Peace - Thursday May 8 thru Saturday May 17 - feeder marches
from across the state to support active duty soldiers and IVAW, to the Fort Drum Spring
Festival in Watertown on Saturday May 17. Website: http://nysmarchesforpeace.org
Sponsored by Citizen Soldier, IVAW, Different Drummer Café, NYS VFP and MFSO
chapters. Chapter 34 has also endorsed this event. At least six chapter members plan to
attend the Watertown event on Saturday May 17th. Pete is arranging for a van, to drive up
late Friday or early Saturday morning; contact no. 718 8056341.
4. Memorial Day Commemoration for Peace - Sunday May 25 at 12 Noon - We plan to
meet at 11:30AM at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 55 Water St. with speaker(s),
procession to Battery Park, where we will have a wreath, additional speaker(s), and cast
flowers into NY Harbor. Permit applications are being processed. AJ will provide the
sound system. Seven speakers are planned, allotted to 5 minutes each. Frank, Greg and
Hugh will bring the Chapter 34 banner and flags. Bill and Nelson will bring flowers.
Greg has contacted the Grannies and Women in Black. Sally has contacted AFSC, and
will call Joe Cross regarding the invocation. Pete is contacting IVAW, BVSJ, etc. Guy
deVeaux will speak for VVAW. Hugh volunteered to pay for the wreath, and Frank will
send out e-mail announcements. Appropriate attire should be worn for the Memorial Day
5. VFP Convention Panel - Adam forwarded a draft IVAW/MFSO proposal for local
VFP chapters to put together a panel at the National VFP convention in Minneapolis
regarding outreach to NG armories and military bases. The proposed panel has been
approved for inclusion at the national convention.
6. National Assembly Meeting - VFP has joined the National Assembly, which aims to
develop greater unity in the domestic peace movement, and build for a national event in
7. United Council for Veterans Rights - Pete passed around flyers regarding a rally
at Sen. Clinton’s NYC office on Thursday May 8, to stop the sale of 25 acres of VA
property, and save the St Albans Naval Hospital for use by veterans returning from Iraq
and Afghanistan. He has requested donations to help defray $250 in printing costs.
8. Media Coverage of Antiwar Events - John McD forwarded a revised draft with ideas
for addressing the lack of mainstream media coverage of antiwar events, including the
Winter Soldier testimony. Chapter members were asked to review it, for discussion at the
9. Chapter Website - The VFP Chapter 34 site address is www.s6k.com/vfp34 which is
a sub-address to the Sektor 6 Kommunications website. Chapter members were asked
to review the site, as well as VFP-National and other chapter websites, to discuss the
content at an upcoming meeting. Pete will locate an area with wi-fi access where the
meeting can take place. Greg looked at the site, and recommended adding links to related
websites, e.g. IVAW.
10. Chapter Communications - Frank asked for input regarding any upcoming events, and
meeting agenda items, for e-mail announcements to the membership.
11. Discussion re What We are doing to End the War? – Chapter members described
the various activities that we are involved in to end the ongoing wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, including outreach to troops and local reserve units, dissemination of
more accurate information, speaking out at vigils and antiwar events, letters to the media
and public officials, etc.

13. Peace Vigils - VFP members currently participate in four ongoing weekly peace
vigils at locations throughout NYC:
! Grandmothers for Peace - Vigil for Peace at Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue between
49 - 50 St. every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 - 5:30 PM.
! Women in Black - Silent Peace Vigil at 41 St and Fifth Avenue every Wednesday
afternoon 5:30 - 6:30 PM
! VFP/Queens Network for Peace & Justice - 2 Peace Vigils, one at Continental Av &
Austin St. in Forest Hills, and one in front of the Flushing Library, Saturday morning
from 11AM - 12 Noon
! West Side - Peace Vigil at 82 St and Broadway every Saturday afternoon at 1PM.
