What is Politics? [an s6k Arts perspective]
more
A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics ?'
Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way:
I am the head of the family, so call me The President. Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government . We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People . The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class . And your baby brother, we will call him the Future. Now think about that and see if it makes sense.'

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.' The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.'

The little boy replies,

'The President is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit.'

[an s6k comment]
The funny thing here is WE [you and us] represent the Government, Working Class, The People, AND the Future in this humorous forwarded tale. The "President" represents the figurehead and the larger people behind the scenes who own and manage the world as we know it. They are on the boards that decide who gets funding and they are the people chosen to enact world policy [economic and social] for their constituencies of power, wealth and legacy.

But never forget, indoctrination starts at home. Take a close look at your own beliefs and from where they derive. The clearer you are about that...the clearer you will be when you look at the world around you.
Sarah Silverman really got it right with her "Florida" effort in this respect. In her drive to get people to Florida to motivate their older family members to vote for Obama, she hit the nail on the head. She pointed out that the people who are "conservatives" go by names like, grandma and grandpa. We would add; dad, mom, sister and friend. We believe it's more important to understand what someone's proclaimed priorities are versus whatever labels people are comfortable applying.

In the arts, a consistent theme is worrying about being "corporate." This is to say the least, dismissive. It seems as if the fact of where the arts gets its money has no place in the discussion. Most companies fund their philanthropic ventures with money that comes from things most artists wouldn't be so happy to put on their adverts next to the sponsorship logo.

If anything is to really be changed in the near future, people need to get crystal clear about who is responsible for everything from arts funding to funding for education, the elderly, the U.S. infrastructure AND how does one define responsible. If we as citizens are more knowledgeable about sports and entertainment, then there's no surprise why the country is where it is. If you can name more novels, celebrities, entertainers or artists than you could name the people who make the social policy we live under, blaming others for our many social ills is less important than informing yourself about the system most say they'd like to change.

Also, don't be shocked to find that arts funding in the U.S. is drying up when we, as a society, leave elderly people starving and homeless and the youth un or under-educated. Every person who says "I don't pay attention to politics" as if it's a badge of pride OR that votes but pays no attention to the facts behind the headlines...THEY are the thing that WILL stop the change you think is coming.
