VFP Chapter 34 Meeting Minutes - May 15, 2008

Attendees: 17(Carl Foster, Frank Stearns, Bob Carpenter, Al Jaccoma, Tom Siracuse,
Bob Grossman, Joe Urgo, Nelson Levitt, Greg Posnick, John MacDougall, Sally
Davidson, June Svetlovsky, Jerry Hassett, Lionelle Hamanaka, Don Simpson, Mitch
Berkowitz, Bob Keilbach)

Agenda:
1. Introductions - The meeting started at 7 PM, chaired by Chapter 34 Pres. Carl Foster.
Minutes of the April 17 chapter meeting were distributed on-line and by hard copy at the
meeting.

2. Treasury Report - The chapter has $584 on hand. Meeting attendees contributed
toward the cost of the meeting room at the church.

3. Memorial Day Commemoration for Peace - Sunday May 25 at 12 Noon - We plan to
meet at 11:30AM at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 55 Water St. with speaker(s),
procession to Battery Park, where we will have a floral wreath, additional speaker(s), and
cast flowers into NY Harbor. Permit applications are being processed. AJ will provide
the sound system. Seven speakers are planned, allotted to 5 minutes each. Frank, Greg
and Hugh will bring the Chapter 34 banner and flags. Bill and Nelson will bring flowers.
Greg has contacted the Grannies and Women in Black. Sally has contacted Joe Cross
regarding the invocation. Pete is contacting IVAW, BVSJ, etc. Guy deVeaux will speak
for VVAW. Frank is sending out e-mail announcements. June’s partner Frank will play
taps at Battery Park. Appropriate attire should be worn for the Memorial Day event.

4. Fleet Week Event - Sunday May 25th, following the Memorial Day event, chapter
members will be distributing literature to arriving sailors and marines. We will meet at
the NW corner of 42 St and 8th Avenue. Sally will bring literature, and Greg will bring
the VFP banner. The majority of chapter members at the meeting plan to attend.

5. 2008 Better World Award Honorees - Gabe forwarded a notice regarding the event,
which will take place at the M L King Labor Center on Sat June 14, 2-5 PM, honoring the
TWU, Domino Sugar Workers, Frank Barbaro, Robert Jackson, etc. The chapter agreed
to place a 1/8 page ad in the journal. Frank, Carl and Bob will contribute to cover the
expense.

6. Antiwar Strategy - Lionelle discussed the current strategy to pressure Senators to
filibuster, if the House approves funding for continuation of Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
There are also plans to petition Gov. Paterson to defederalize the NY State National
Guard, similar to actions in Vermont and NJ. Carl and Sally will research the legality of a
state defederalizing the NG, and report back at the next meeting.

7. Presidential Election - Nelson proposed that the chapter become more involved in
addressing the importance of the upcoming presidential election, and outlining the
positions of presidential candidates, regarding how they meet our priorities. AJ added that
UFPJ intends to promote an extensive voter registration education program this year.
8. Media Coverage of Antiwar Events – Frank led a discussion of John McD’s revised

draft with ideas for addressing the lack of mainstream media coverage of antiwar events,
including the Winter Soldier testimony, as well as suggestions regarding chapter actions.
.
9. New Business/Upcoming Events
a. Thursday May 8 - Saturday May 17 - NY State March for Peace, feeder marches from
across the state to Fort Drum Spring Festival in Watertown on Saturday May 17. Pete and
Bill are attending the march and festival.

b. Saturday May 17, 5:45AM - outreach to NG and reservists, at Harlem armory, and
Marines in Garden City, LI.

c. Sunday May 25, 12 Noon - Memorial Day Commemoration for Peace, followed by
Fleet Week event at NW corner of 42 St and 8 Ave.

d. Saturday May 31 - Pedal for Peace, 11AM Central Park

e. Sunday June 29 - Gay Pride Parade

f. August 28-30 - Annual VFP Convention, Minneapolis, MN

10. Peace Vigils - VFP members currently participate in four ongoing weekly peace
vigils at locations throughout NYC:
! Grandmothers for Peace - Vigil for Peace at Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue between
49 - 50 St. every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 - 5:30 PM.
! Women in Black - Silent Peace Vigil at 41 St and Fifth Avenue every Wednesday
afternoon 5:30 - 6:30 PM
! VFP/Queens Network for Peace & Justice - 2 Peace Vigils, one at Continental Av &
Austin St. in Forest Hills, and one in front of the Flushing Library, Saturday morning
from 11AM - 12 Noon
! West Side - Peace Vigil at 82 St and Broadway every Saturday afternoon at 1PM.

11. Meeting Schedule – First and Third Thursday of each month, unless otherwise noted,

The Executive Committee meets once a month, at 6:30 PM, on the last Thursday of the
month. The next Executive Committee meeting will be on Thursday May 29, 2008 at 28
E. 35 St. at 6:30 PM
