The Hancock T&T Community Backyard Garden Park, 324 Hancock Street ("The Community Backyard") btwn Throop & Tompkins Aves., Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY, is the brainchild of Darryl Montgomery. Because this region of Bed-Stuy has a very small amount of usable greenspace and no flex designed outdoor spaces of this size, his objective was to transform an underused Green Thumb community garden into a mini Prospect Park in the heart of Bed-Stuy, a place he refers to as the "Urban Heartland." Partnered with Gerald Coulthurst, Hancock T&T Block Association President, powered by Green Thumb, and empowered by community volunteers, the team of the Bed-Stuy Community Coalition and the Hancock T&T Block Assoc. built the Community Backyard over an approximate 3 year period that began July 2014. Our partners include Harlem School of the Arts, The New York City Department of Records, The Apollo Theater, Stoops Brooklyn, Bailey's Cafe, Royal Rib House, Decent Vinyl, The Brooklyn Micro Museum and many other wonderful entities. Click "The Team" link to see a complete list.
In the spirit of Ella Baker,
legendary community strategist and human rights leader, we dedicate our Hancock T&T Community Backyard Garden Park project to her work to
empower people to put their philosophies and concerns to action. She
taught many how to find their own strengths and apply them to the
community. We launch this in her honor.
