Our homebase, The Hancock T&T "Community Backyard" Garden [324
Hancock St., btwn. Throop and Tompkins Aves.], is a model that was instituted in the form of a
massive three year makeover plan in a partnership with the Hancock
T&T Block Association that has
inspired the
community in ways we could not have dared to dream. Because of the solid support and partnership from the Hancock T&T Block Association president, Jerry Coulthurst, we've been able to create an anchor location that represents our model of community development / empowerment and community urban planning.

The public portion of the park is now completed open daily while we complete the infrastructure buildout in the garden / grow space, all of which begun July 27, 2014. We began functioning with as a community park June 14, 2016. It has now become the community comfort station to munch, read, rest, workout, and chat.
The Bed-Stuy
Community Coalition team brings a broad organizational and production
skillset that most communities and organizations can benefit from, which
is our strongest asset. We are in the final phase of completing our
transformation of this community garden into what we have dubbed from
the words of a brother who works on the garden, "The Community
Backyard." It is a model of what can happen when community-grown organizations partner with block associations to create community space
for the benefit of the entire community. Being open 60 hours per week (noon to 8pm Mon - Friday, 10am to 8pm Sat - Sun), we are in the top tier of having the largest amount of per week open hours in the Green Thumb system. Since there are so many gardens that do great work, our objective set a high bar for how we function technically and structurally.
This is a project designed to jumpstart a community to heal itself.
Community members of the Hancock St. region have given their time,
money, resources and sweat to transform this space. This is a model that
develops community ownership over the resources in the community. This is a triumph over the helpless
feeling many people have that stops them from harnessing their own power
to affect positive change in their own neighborhoods and lives. We give ultimate
respect to all who have participated in
the success of this project.
CLICK TO MAKE A DONATION [We are not a 501c3 non-profit and there is no tax relief available with your donation.]
We are providing the platform, the human capital, and resources to do more working than talking. We are honored to be presenting at official Green Thumb workshops to teach the model / strategies used in the development and management of this garden park.
