Incarcerated Mothers in the United States
a traveling public art installation
A dramatic exhibit of painting, drawings, sculpture, sound design and photography that documents the experiences of incarcerated persons in the United States.
Interrupted Life seeks to educate and invites discussion about current realities and decent solutions to a major and growing problem in U.S. society. National curator: Rickie Solinger
Organized by Rickie Solinger, director and curator of WAKEUP/Arts in New York, this exhibition brings together eight installations. Works include the "Real Cost of Prisons" comic book project, the San Francisco Photovoice Project, and CAPACITY, a youth arts program in Columbus, Ohio, and a "sound bag" audio installation created by Darryl Hell. The result is a powerful commentary on imprisonment, the emotional impact incarceration has on families, and stigmas generated by incarceration.

Rickie Solinger is a historian and curator. She is the author of Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race before Roe v. Wade, Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion, and Welfare in the U.S., and other books and articles about reproductive politics and welfare politics. Ms. Solinger curates art exhibitions associated with the themes of her books; the shows travel to college and university galleries around the country, aiming to interrupt the curriculum.
