Attendees: 16 (Bob Carpenter, Hugh Bruce, Bob Grossman, Bill Gilson, John MacDougall, Pete Bronson, Nelson Levitt, Frank Stearns, Bob Davidow, Lionelle Hamanaka, Aris Colonna, Don Simpson, Mitch Berkowitz, Jay Janson, Hannah Rappleye, Bob Keilbach). 


1. Introductions - The meeting started at 7 PM, chaired by Hugh Bruce. Hannah Rappleye, a senior at the New School, attended as a guest. She is working on a project regarding Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, and would like to interview veterans of all wars. Hannah may be contacted at: 

2. Treasury Report - Meeting attendees contributed toward the cost of the meeting room at the Community Church Bob C expressed concern that current chapter expenses exceed income. It was agreed that the issue of chapter dues and/or fundraising would be addressed by the Executive Committee, and presented to the Chapter at the October 18 meeting. Bob is also contacting the Community Church, to reduce our current rent, and drafting a fund-raising letter, to be addressed to members and supporters. Sally will also help provide addresses of supporters.

3. UFPJ Regional Actions - Bob G has been representing Chapter 34 at UFPJ meetings in planning for the NYC Regional march on Saturday October 27th in NYC. A march permit was been obtained from NYPD.   

Contingent groups will be assembling on Broadway north of Union Square up to 23rd St. and on the side streets 18th - 22nd between 5th and Park Avenues. We will
then march down Broadway to Foley Square for a Peace and Justice Fair. VFP will have a table at the fair, sell paraphernalia and do fundraising.

UFPJ has a half-page English/Spanish leaflet posted on the website: and will soon have another flier with a local contact box for
insertion of information about contingent groups, feeder marches, etc. The website will also have a housing board, map of the assembly area and route, contingent locations, etc.

A mailing is being prepared by the Veterans Peace Council for dissemination to all local veteran contacts, which will also include information regarding the Veterans Day Parade, Moe Fishman memorial service, IVAW showing of “Meeting Resistance” and VFP pre-Veterans Day events. 

4. Veterans Day Parade - Sunday November 11 - our contingent will be marching again in the annual NYC Veterans Day Parade to present our anti-war message, as a counterpoint to the many pro-war groups participating. We will have chapter banners, “Bring them Home Now” banners, and music at the parade. Hugh has registered our contingent. Bill G volunteered to help Hugh with preparations for the parade. Aris and John M volunteered to help out as marshals for our contingent. We plan to honor our recently fallen brother members from NY & NJ from the Reviewing Stand. 

5. Moe Fishman Memorial - Saturday November 10 @10:30AM to 2PM, followed by a reception, at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South, NYC. Mo's partner Georgia Wever needs help this weekend, Friday-Sunday, in stuffing envelopes for a mailing to go out this weekend. 6. VFP Pre-Veterans Day Event - Saturday October 10 at 3PM. We will be meeting in Washington Square Park, after the memorial event for our brother Moe. Bob Grossman will apply for the Parks Dept permit this week.  

7. Lt.Watada Retrial - Lt. Ehren Watada's double-jeopardy re-trial has been scheduled to commence on Tuesday, October 9. We will be meeting in Washington Square Park, on Friday October 12 from 11AM-2PM, and Saturday October 13 from 12-2PM, to distribute information regarding the unconstitutional re-trial of Lt. Watada, who is being prosecuted for speaking out so courageously at the 2006 VFP Convention in Seattle.

8. Iraq Moratorium/Molly Ivins Campaign - Chapter members will be participating in continuing local actions in memory of Molly Ivins, to be held on the third Friday of each month, in front of Sen. Hillary Clinton's NY City office at 780 3rd Avenue, at 48 St. from 12-2PM, with pots, pans and noise-makers. This series of ongoing events will also serve as Chapter 34's participation in the ongoing Iraq Moratorium campaign.    Websites:     &

9. International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons Conference - Pete B, Paul Brown and Rich Gilchrist of CA Chapter 56 attended the Conference at the UN Church in NYC on October 2-3, representing VFP. Lionelle also attended part of the conference. They reported on the efforts of other nations and cities to ban DU, and the court case initiated by sick veterans. Pete and Rich plan to write a report to VFP regarding the discussions and issues presented, and form a committee for further action.

10. New Business/Upcoming Events

a. October 5-7, 2007 “Marching Home” Conference on the Iraq War and its Consequences for Veterans, at Rutgers Univ. New Brunswick, NJ. Rutgers Against the War (RAW) and the Central Jersey Coalition Against Endless War will host a conference on the issue of veterans returning from the Iraq War, free. b. Friday October 19, and every third Friday thereafter, 12-2PM - Iraq Moratorium/Raise Hell for Molly Ivins Campaign demonstration, with noisemakers, in front of Senator Clinton's Office at Third Avenue and 48 St.

d. Sunday October 21, evening - IVAW Fundraiser, showing of “Meeting Resistance” in the village

g. Saturday November 10 @3PM - VFP Veterans Day event in Washington Square Park

11. Peace Vigils - VFP members currently participate in four ongoing weekly peace vigils at locations throughout NYC:

! Grandmothers for Peace - Vigil for Peace at Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue between 49 - 50 St. every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 - 5:30 PM. 

! Women in Black - Silent Peace Vigil at 41 St and Fifth Avenue every Wednesday afternoon 5:30 - 6:30 PM

! VFP/Queens Network for Peace & Justice - 2 Peace Vigils, one at Continental Av & Austin St. in Forest Hills, and one in front of the Flushing Library, Saturday morning from 11AM - 12 Noon 

These vigils have been a positive means of educating the public regarding efforts to defund the Iraq war and end the occupation, bring our troops home, and provide information to counter military recruiters, as well as attempt to attract new members.
